What is a White Card?

A White Card is a mandatory certification required in order to work on construction sites in Australia. The card is also sometimes referred to as a general induction card or a construction induction card. In order to obtain a White Card, you must complete an approved training course. Once you have completed the course and passed the assessment, you will be issued with a physical card which you must then carry with you at all times when working on a construction site. You will also receive a certificate which you should also keep safe.

Prior to the white card there was a ‘blue card’ and a ‘red card’. The blue card was for low-risk work and the red card was for high-risk work. The white card replaced both of these cards and is now the only card required to work on a construction site in Australia

Do I need a White Card?

If you are planning to work on a construction site in Australia, you will need to obtain a White Card. This includes anyone who is planning to work as a labourer, tradesperson, or supervisor on a construction site. It is also a requirement for anyone who is planning to enter a construction site as part of their job, even if they are not carrying out any work while they are on site.

Do I need a White Card to enter a construction site?

You do not need a White Card just to enter a construction site as a visitor. If you are employed by a company that carries out work on construction sites, you will likely need a White Card in order to enter the site as part of your job, even if you are not carrying out any work while you are on site.

Do I Need a White Card If I Have a Blue Card?

If you hold a current Blue Card, you may not need to obtain a White Card. Check with your employer or the relevant construction industry body in your state or territory to find out if this exemption applies to you. However, with the changes in legislation and industry best practices even if you don’t have to get a White Card , it is often best to do so. This will ensure that you are up-to-date with the latest health and safety requirements

Do White Cards expire?

White Cards do not expire, however it is a good idea to keep up to date with any changes to legislation about if refresher training is required.

Also, if you don’t regularly go on to a construction site or haven’t been on one in a couple of years, you may find that a company will ask you to complete it again to show you are competent.

Are White Cards valid Australia wide?

Yes. Once you have obtained a White Card, it is valid Australia-wide. It is valid even if the form of delivery is not allowed in the state in which you will be working. For instance, if you get your White Card online in Western Australia, it will be valid in South Australia which doesn’t allow online White Card training for their residents.

Why are White Cards important?

White Cards are important because they show that you have completed the necessary training to work safely on a construction site. They ensure that you are aware of the hazards and risks of working on a construction site and know some of the basic documents that you may come across such as safe work method statements and risk assessments.

Where Can I Get a White Card?

There are a few options available to you when it comes to completing your White Card training. You can complete the training in person, online, or via a combination of both

In-Person Training:

If you choose to complete your training in person, you will need to find a registered training organisation (RTO) that offers the course. Once you have found an RTO, you will need to complete the training and assessment at their premises. This option can be a good choice if you prefer to learn in a face-to-face environment or if you feel you may need some extra support during the learning process

Online Training:

If you would prefer to complete your White Card training online, you can do so through an RTO that offers the course online. You will need to ensure that the RTO is accredited and that the course is recognised in your state or territory. Once you have found an RTO that meets these criteria, you will be able to complete the training and assessment at a time and place that suits you. This option can be a good choice if you are short on time or if you prefer to learn in an online environment.

Combination Training:

Some RTOs offer a combination of both in-person and online training. This can be a good option if you want the flexibility to complete some of the training online and some of it in person.

What Are the Benefits of Online White Card Training?

There are a number of benefits that come with completing your White Card training online. These include:

Flexibility

One of the biggest advantages of completing your White Card training online is the flexibility it offers. You will be able to complete the training at a time and place that suits you, which can be helpful if you have a busy lifestyle.

Convenience

Another advantage of completing your White Card training online is the convenience it offers. You won’t need to travel to an RTO to complete the training, which can save you time and money.

Cost-Effective

Online White Card training is often more cost-effective than in-person training. This is because RTOs don’t need to cover the costs associated with running a physical training course, such as renting training space and providing materials.

Accredited Training

When you complete your White Card training online with an accredited RTO, you can be confident that you are receiving high-quality, recognised training. This is important as it means your White Card will be accepted by employers in all states and territories.

So, if you’re looking for a flexible, convenient and cost-effective way to complete your White Card training, online training may be the best option for you.

Which States Allow Online White Card Training?

All states and territories in Australia unfortunately have different rules and regulations when it comes to White Card training. This means that some states allow online training, while others do not. Some allow online training in the form of a ‘virtual classroom’ where the training is delivered by a real person, in real time via Zoom or similar. While others allow online White Card training to be delivered on demand in the students own time.

It should be remembered though that no matter where or how the training is delivered, it must be delivered by an accredited RTO in order for the White Card to be valid. And once you have attained your White Card it is valid Australia wide no matter which delivery method or state you completed the training in.

Does Queensland allow online White Card training?

Queensland allows online white card training if it is delivered in real time in a virtual classroom. This means it will need to be completed over the course of a day, usually 6 – 8 hours. Even though it is not as flexible as other online training it does still allow you to study from home and not have to find a face to face location which can be difficult if you live in a rural area.

Does New South Wales allow online White Card training?

New South Wales allows online White Card training similarly to Queensland. It must be delivered in real time in a virtual classroom. It is not self-paced or on demand.

Does Victoria allow online White Card training?

Victoria no longer allows online White card training to be delivered on demand, so like previous states must be delivered either in real time in a virtual classroom, or face to face.

Does Tasmania allow online White Card training?

Tasmania allows online White Card training to be delivered on demand meaning you can do the course when you have time and over several days. However, you must be a Tasmanian resident, and you have to go to a Service Tasmania outlet to apply for and recieve your physical White Card and certificate.

Does Northern Territory allow online White Card training?

The Northern Territory does not allow any forms of online White Card training and it must be completed in a face to face environment.

Does Western Australia allow online White Card training?

Western Australia allows online white card training to be delivered on demand and at the students own pace.

Does South Australia allow online White Card training?

South Australia doesn’t allow any forms of online White Card training and as such must be completed in a face to face classroom.

Does Australian Capital Territory allow White Card training online?

ACT doesn’t allow online White Card training, so all White Card training must be completed face to face in a phyical classroom.

How to choose an online White Card training provider?

Now you know which states allow online White Card training and how it differs between them, the next step is to choose a provider. When looking for an online provider there are a few key things you should look out for:

  • They are an accredited RTO
  • Training is delivered by a real person in real time (not on demand or self-paced if not allowed in your state)
  • You will receive a physical White Card in the mail (not just a PDF)
  • They have good reviews
  • They are based in Australia
  • The pricing is reasonable with no added extras
